Malay Mail 23 March 1998 Remembering P Ramlee by Gerald Chuah We are all familiar with the evergreen numbers of legendary and singer Tan Sri P Ramlee. Though he passed away more than two decades ago, his contribution to the entertainment world is not forgotten. Bringing back the memories and nostalgic feelings of yesteryear is a new album by Liza Hanim entitled 'Di Manakan Ku Cari Ganti'. It is released by Suria Records Sdn Bhd. The ablum title refers to a famous P Ramlee song, which translated, means 'Where Do I Find A Replacement'? The song also carries another meaning - that until today, P Ramlee's contribution to the local entertainment scene remains unparalleled. The acoustic album comprises 12 songs, which includes numbers by P Ramlee and Saloma. The oldies have been given a new lease of life by the talented 19-year-old, although the lyrics and melody remain the same. The tracks are: 'Di Manakan Ku Cari Ganti', 'Rindu Hatiku Tidak Terkira', 'Airmata Di Kuala Lumpur', 'Jangal Tinggal Daku', 'Bila Aku Pergi', 'Barang Yang Lepas Jangan Dikenang', 'Hujan Di Tengahari', 'Istana Cintamu', 'Senyum Tak Berbalas', 'Putus Sudah Kasih Sayang', 'Hilang Terang Timbul Gelap' and 'Malam ini Kita Berpisah'. The album was launched by Tan Sri Datuk Seri Ahmad Sarji at MATIC last Sunday in conjunction with the birthday of the late Tan Sri P Ramlee. During the ceremony, Liza sang four numbers from the album. She also received a platinum award for her debut album Epilog, which sold 80,000 copies. Other activities during the day-long event was a prayer session, performance by students from Tadika Pertiwi, launch of the P Ramlee Fund to help his family, a preview of P Ramlee Cyber Museum, and a performance by Suria Record artistes. Liza said the limited edition album differs from Epilog as it uses the acoustic sounds of instruments like the violin, guitar, mandolin, percussion and saxophone, besides the sound of wind and rain. As a result, it sounds clearer and more defined compared to other recordings, she said. The songs are selected by producer Adnan Abu Hassan, who also produced Epilog. "Some of the songs are difficult to master, especially those in the Malay traditional rhythm. However, Adnan gives me the freedom to express myself in my own style," she said. She said the album is to bring back memories of P Ramlee and Saloma as well as introduce such music to the younger generation. End
